Taxes

Tax is a setting of the estimate itself, not a separate calculation. The mode is called VAT, but Dead Point uses it for any tax charged as a percentage of the amount: VAT, GST in Australia and Canada, sales tax in the US. Set your country's rate and the client sees tax as a separate line.

  1. Open the estimate and go to the Settings tab
  2. In the Tax policy section, set Tax mode to VAT
  3. Enter the rate in Rate percent, for example 20 or 7.5
  4. In Tax basis, choose Included or Excluded
  5. In Default fixed-cost tax behavior, choose Taxable or Non-taxable

To skip tax, set Tax mode to None. The basis and fixed-cost fields are then hidden, and a hint in the section says why.

Tax basis says where the tax sits:

ValueWhat happensExample: rate 20%, work total 1000
ExcludedTax is added on top1000 + 200 = 1200
IncludedTax is already inside the price and is carved out of it1000, of which 166.67 is tax

Pick the one that matches how you quoted the price: "1000 plus tax" is Excluded, "1000 including tax" is Included.

Effort is always taxed. Fixed costs have a choice:

  • The default is set in the estimate settings: Default fixed-cost tax behavior
  • For a single row, the Tax behavior field changes it: Inherit default, Taxable or Non-taxable

This way one estimate can hold a license without tax and work with tax.

  • Report page. Under the price it says "Including tax" with the tax amount, or "Excluding tax" if there is none. In the cost block, tax is a separate Tax line, and Total comes below it
  • PDF. The cost block has Subtotal before tax, Tax and the total

Tax is calculated in the estimate currency, like all other amounts. For currency conversion see "Currencies and rates".
